What is a Japan eSIM?
A Japan eSIM is a digital SIM you install on your phone by scanning a QR code. It gives you mobile data in Japan on local networks (Docomo, SoftBank, au) without buying a physical SIM card at the airport or paying roaming prices from your home carrier.
With Wasla you compare data allowances, durations and euro prices for Japan. Install your eSIM over Wi-Fi and follow the plan's activation instructions.
It works alongside your normal SIM. Keep your home number for calls and messages, and use the Japan eSIM for maps, messaging apps, rides, banking and everything else that needs internet.
Plan details and usage rules
- Data plans: the full data amount can be used any time within the validity days.
- Unlimited plans, where available: consult the selected plan's fair-use policy, daily high-speed allowance and reduced-speed limits.
- Validity starts at the first connection to a network in Japan, not at purchase.
- The eSIM is data only: it has no phone number for calls or SMS. WhatsApp, Telegram, FaceTime and other app calls work normally.
- A QR code can be installed once. Do not delete the eSIM from your phone while you still need it.
- Your phone must be carrier-unlocked and support eSIM.
Discover Japan
Japan, known as Nihon or Nippon (日本) in Japanese, is an island nation in East Asia. Its insular character has allowed it to develop a unique and very intricate culture, while its closeness to other ancient East Asian cultures, in particular China, has left lasting influence. Despite belonging to a nation long at war, Japan's people have always placed emphasis on inner balance, tranquility and natural beauty. These traditional values have become increasingly important now that Japan has grown to be one of the world's most densely-populated countries, and its legendary work ethic makes life in its cities quite hectic.

Your number stays yours, and every app keeps working
- Your SIM stays put: No swapping cards. Your home SIM keeps receiving calls, SMS and verification codes.
- Every app keeps working: WhatsApp keeps the same number and chats — it only uses the eSIM's data.
- Choose the data line: In settings, set the Japan eSIM as your mobile-data line and turn off roaming on your home SIM.
From checkout to signal in three steps
- Explore a plan: Compare available data or unlimited plans for Japan and pay securely online.
- Install when issued: Follow your QR or manual installation instructions over wi-fi on a compatible, unlocked phone.
- Land and connect: Switch the eSIM on when you arrive in Japan. Data roaming must be on for the eSIM line.
Questions
Which networks does the Japan eSIM use?
It connects to Docomo, SoftBank, au.
When should I install my Japan eSIM?
Install it before you travel while you have wi-fi. The plan only starts counting when it first connects in Japan.
Will my phone work?
Compatibility varies by exact model and regional variant. Check your manufacturer's specifications and look for an EID by dialling *#06#. The phone must also be carrier-unlocked.
Can I keep using WhatsApp with my own number?
Yes. WhatsApp keeps your number; it simply uses the eSIM's data connection.
What if the eSIM does not work?
Message Wasla support on WhatsApp — we help in English and Dari until you are connected. If an eSIM cannot be delivered, you receive a full refund.
Is an eSIM better than pocket Wi-Fi in Japan?
An eSIM lives inside your phone, so there is no extra device to charge, carry or return at the airport. Pocket Wi-Fi can be shared by a group; an eSIM is simpler for one person per phone.
Does the Japan eSIM work in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka?
Yes. It connects to Japan's national mobile networks, which cover cities, train lines and most tourist areas. Signal can be weaker in remote mountains.
Can I get a Japanese phone number with this eSIM?
No. It is data only. Keep your home number on your normal SIM and use WhatsApp, LINE or other apps for calls and messages over the eSIM's data.
How do I install an eSIM on iPhone?
Connect to Wi-Fi, open Settings → Mobile Service (or Cellular) → Add eSIM, then scan the QR code from your Wasla order. Turn the new line on for mobile data and data roaming when you arrive.
How do I install an eSIM on Android?
Connect to Wi-Fi, open Settings → Network & internet (or Connections) → SIMs → Add eSIM, then scan the QR code from your Wasla order. Menu names vary by phone maker.
How can I check how much eSIM data I have left?
Open the link in your confirmation email to your Wasla order page: it shows your remaining data, the amount used and the installation status, with no app needed. Your phone also shows usage: iPhone Settings → Mobile Service (or Cellular), Android Settings → Network & internet → SIMs. Network reports can lag by 1–3 hours.
Will I be warned before my data runs out?
Yes. Wasla sends you an email when the data on your plan is running low. It shows exactly how much is left and links to your order page, so you can get more before your connection stops.
